How to play retro games like Tetris and Pong using your Mac’s Terminal

Did you ever know that the Mac has a hidden folder with Terminal-compatible versions of most of the retro games? Tetris, Pong, Snake and others are all there waiting to be played once more in 21st Century. Using some commands from the Terminal you will be able to play them endlessly without the fear of killing the battery life.

To start, open the Terminal in Applications > Utilities folder or search it using Spotlight. Type then emacs in the Terminal window; you will see appearing long lines of words about this command. Hit ESC on the keyboard and you will get a screen like this;

type then x followed by the name of the game you want to play. In this case, tetris. A new screen should load up with the game ready to be played using arrow keys. If you want to change game, repeat these steps and change the name at the end.

Sapevate che il Mac ha una cartella nascosta con alcuni dei più famosi giochi retro compatibili con il Terminale? Tetris, Pong, Snake e altri sono tutti lì, in attesa di essere giocati ancora una volta nel 21esimo secolo. Usando alcuni comandi dal Terminale sarete in grado di giocarci senza limiti e senza il timore di fare fuori la batteria del computer.

Per iniziare, aprite il Terminale nella cartella Applicazioni > Utility o cercandone il nome usando Spotlight. Digitate quindi il comando emacs nella finestra del Terminale; vedrete apparire lunghe linee di aiuto su come utilizzarlo. Premete dunque ESC sulla tastiera; a questo punto dovreste avere una schermata come quella mostrata sopra.

Digitate ancora sulla tastiera x seguito dal nome del gioco che ci interessa, per esempio Tetris, ed ecco che il Terminale lo caricherà pronto per essere giocato.

Quando sarete stanchi di Tetris, riaprite una nuova finestra del Terminale e cambiate il nome al termine dopo aver seguito nuovamente i passaggi.

Nel caso in cui non venga caricato nulla, aprite il Finder, premete sulla tastiera Cmd+Shift+G e inserite il percorso /usr/share/emacs/22.1/lisp/play , in cui si trova un elenco di tutti i giochi installati.
