How to install Windows 8.1 Preview on a Mac using Boot Camp 5 drivers

Windows 8.1 is available as a free Preview for those who wants to try out the new version without waiting for autumn to come. although the simplest way to update your computer is through Windows Store, there is the option to do a clean install using the .iso file. Thanks to this, it’s possible to try Windows 8.1 on a Mac using Boot Camp 5. The following tutorial has been made with an iMac 27″ mid 2011. Macs that supports Windows 8 are the following ones; if yours is not listed, it means is not compatible.

First you need to download Windows 8.1 Preview from here (64 bit is recommended) in any language you want. Make sure to copy somewhere the license code needed for activation. For your convenience, here it is: NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F. The file you have anyway is not ready to be used yet. In Boot Camp assistant, tick the first option to create a bootable DVD using the .iso file and burn it following the on screen steps provided.

Next, you are going to need the Boot Camp drivers for the hardware to work once Windows 8.1 is installed. The latest pack is available from Apple Support website and weights 533MB. Once you got it, save the extracted folder named “BootCamp5″ on a external USB drive or DVD.

Proceed by partitioning the hard disk from Boot Camp assistant; OS X will automatically restart the Mac and boot using the Windows 8.1 DVD burned previously. Before the install process starts, Windows will prompt to select a hard drive to install the system. The right one is named “BOOTCAMP” in capital letters and has a dimension a little lower than the GB you gave it when partitioning the HD. Anyway, you can’t proceed since it is doesn’t have NTFS file system. Click the “Format” button and begin installing the software. Be extremely cautious on this, since formatting the wrong drive will result in critical damage for the Mac.

At this point, Windows 8.1 is installed successfully and you should have already set up settings like PC name, account and stuff. Go to the Desktop from the Start menu, and open File Explorer. Attach the USB drive containing Boot Camp 5 drivers and copy it on the computer. Open the “BootCamp5″ folder > BootCamp and execute the “setup.exe”. Follow the on screen instructions and once done, restart the computer.

It’s done! Windows is installed successfully and drivers are working fine. From here, you can experience what’s new or, if you’re new, try out Windows 8.1 and see how it performs. Prima di tutto dobbiamo ottenere Windows 8.1 Preview da qui (si raccomanda a 64-bit) in qualsiasi lingua e siate certi di copiare il product key necessario per l’attivazione che segue: NTTX3-RV7VB-T7X7F-WQYYY-9Y92F. Il file (pesante alcuni GB) una volta scaricato non è ancora utilizzabile. Mediante l’Assistente Boot Camp (in /Applicazioni/Utility), spuntate la prima opzione per masterizzare un DVD eseguibile di Windows dal file ISO seguendo le istruzioni.

Ora, servono i driver Boot Camp più recenti per l’hardware una volta che Windows 8.1 sarà installato. Il pacchetto più recente è disponibile sul sito di Supporto Apple e pesa 533MB. A download completato, salvate la cartella estratta chiamata “BootCamp5″ su una chiavetta USB o DVD.

Inseriamo il DVD di Windows 8.1 martirizzato in precedenza e partizioniamo l’hard disk dall’Assistente Boot Camp. OS X riavvierà il Mac in automatico e caricherà il setup di Windows 8.1 (questo potrebbe richiedere diversi minuti). Prima che il processo d’installazione abbia luogo, dovremmo specificare l’hard disk di destinazione. Quello corretto è denominato “BOOTCAMP” a lettere maiuscole avente una dimensione leggermente inferiore rispetto a quella assegnata mentre dividevate il disco. Tuttavia, non potete andare avanti perché non ha un file system NTFS. Cliccate il pulsante “formatta” e quindi iniziate ad installare il software. Siate estremamente cauti, perché formattare la partizione sbagliate arrecherebbe danni critici al Mac.

A questo punto, Windows 8.1 è installato correttamente e avete già impostato il nome del PC, account e cose del genere. Dallo Start, andate sul desktop e aprite File Explorer (Esplora Risorse in italiano). Inserite la chiavetta USB contenente i driver di Boot Camp 5 ed eseguite il file “setup.exe” contenuto in BootCamp5 > BootCamp. Seguite la procedura guidata e al termine riavviate.

Fatto! Windows ora è installato correttamente assieme ai driver. Da qui, potete provare fin da subito le novità introdotte e, se siete nuovi, sperimentare Windows 8.1 e vedere come funziona.
